The Chess Mind

By Dennis Monokroussos.
This is a blog for chess fans by a chess fan, one who loves the beauty of the game and wants to share it with those who are like-minded.
Yet the chess mind is not only a chess mind, and other topics, such as philosophy, may appear from time to time. All material copyrighted.
The Day in Chess History
According to the Chess Cafe's calendar, August 31 is noteworthy for three events in chess history: the death of Andre Philidor (1795), the birth of Petar Trifunovic, and the death of Moshe Czerniak. Yet, noteworthy as those events are, there's a fourth I think even more significant taken as a chess event: it was the day of Fischer's championship-clinching victory in game 21 over Boris Spassky in their 1972 match! Granted, the game was adjourned and Spassky only telephoned in his resignation (without resumption) the next day, but all the real work occured on the 31st.

So, to commemorate the day, that game, along with games from the three players mentioned above, are offered for your replaying pleasure here. Enjoy!

Don't be modest: What about your birthday on 8/31? Have a good one! the big 4-0 isn't far away :-) My advice to you is to have a big party next year, it takes some of the edge off (as I did in 2002 when I crossed the threshold...)

Happy Birthday! Your Monday night fans would certainly list you in the above as being significant on this day. Hope it is the best you have had. As for next year, I passed it almost eight years ago and it was just a number, except for the weight gain, sore joints, etc.
Hope you like Chilis.

Where can you find the games from Fischer - Spassky with the exact dates? None of the books I have on the match mention the dates of each game, and no pgn file I've found on the net lists the exact dates either... just curious

Thanks for the birthday wishes, Alex and sbb1cpa. Smithmorra, the dates are given in ChessBase's Mega2005 database; beyond that, I know not.
