By Dennis Monokroussos.
This is a blog for chess fans by a chess fan, one who loves the beauty of the game and wants to share it with those who are like-minded.
Yet the chess mind is not only a chess mind, and other topics, such as philosophy, may appear from time to time. All material copyrighted.
Those interested in following this annual Las Vegas event can do so via the Monroi site - you'll find the specific link on the right side of that page.
The monroi site does indeed seem to be working, but only for the top boards... hint, hint. OK, I'll say it. Please let us know of your exploits in Vegas when you get the chance. We're rooting for ya!
Yeah, Nakamura and Shabalov are interesting, but we are interested in the Blog Master. Is there a post with the cross tables? You would think that USCF might do some updates.
Good luck and congratulations on your last tournament.
Here are the results so far. Round 1, drew with Black vs. a 2129. What can you do? Round 2, won with White vs. 2170. Round 3, lost with Black to Akobian in 63 moves. Round 4, beat a 2244 with White. Round 5, drew a 2288 with Black.
Steve, are you claiming I'm going to retire after this tournament or worse, die?
You would think with age would come wisdom, but I can't seem to figure that one out. Perhaps I should have said Congratulations on the perfect score in the MISHAWAKA OLD STYLE open tournament(clearly you were the odds on favorite to win all of your games, but sometimes things don't happen the way they should). I hope you don't retire and certainly would wish you an extremely long and prosperous life.
Thanks for the update. I know there may not be "good" losses, but to take a strong GM 63 moves must be a good feeling.
Thanks for the clarification, Steve! It doesn't feel especially good to take a GM 63 moves if the end result is a loss; I just threw the move count in there to indicate that it was a long battle. Better is to beat the GM, or at least to draw (as I did tonight vs. Sharavdorj). I beat a 2262 in the morning round, and so finished up 4.5-2.5. Not a bad event, and now I'm completely spent!

Yes, I'm back playing again - consider it a comeback! As for stories, I'll have more to say about my performance and the event in general once I return to the delightful climate of Indiana (sarcasm); that is, in a day or two.
As a personal observer to a couple of Dennis's games I can say he was in fine fighting shape. He is also a class act in person, taking time to chat before preparing for the next round. Thanks Dennis !

Enjoy your stay and have a great New Year.
Keep pushing,

+2 is a pretty good result, as I don't believe you've been playing recently. Is this the beginning of a comeback? :)
Plus, any interesting stories, or is this a "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" deal?
Happy New Year!

I took GM Christiansen to 88 moves once, didn't feel to good about losing to a GM either.
Good luck on the comeback Dennis.
