This Week's ChessBase Show: Anand-Kramnik recap, part 4
The match is over, and Viswanathan Anand has retained his championship title, defeating Vladimir Kramnik 6.5-4.5. In the first half of the match, he dominated in every respect: his preparation was superior, he was able to reach positions where Kramnik was uncomfortable and his tactical prowess was superior. Even when Kramnik managed to reach playable positions out of the opening, something else would go wrong. After six games, Kramnik was almost fortunate to be down by only three points.

As the match wore on and neared its end, though, Kramnik started to turn the tables. Now it was his preparation that was better, and he started pressing in every game. It wasn't enough to save the match, but it did turn a rout into a genuine contest with a little drama.

So this week, in our final show on the match, we'll take a look at the last act. Game 9 was a great chance for Kramnik, who was just about winning near the end. In game 10, Kramnik even managed to win with his best novelty in the match. And then there was game 11 - a very interesting contest, but one in which Anand reasserted himself and drew confidently, putting an end to the match. Good and interesting games one and all, and we'll examine them tonight, Wednesday night, at 9 p.m. ET. Log on to the Playchess.com server, go to the Broadcast room, and find Anand-Kramnik in the games list. Hope to see you there!

I hope to see you there too, Dennis, if I can only get in as a guest!

Playchess has not been granting me access to the Broadcast room for your shows - I thought they were supposed to be free (when live)! Very disappointing. I'll try once more.

Dennis Monokroussos:
Hello,

This question/topic has come up several times the past few weeks among people who were blocked from entering the Broadcast room on account of an invalid serial number. The solution, one surmises, is to obtain a valid serial number. :) Playchess accounts are generally good for a year, and then they turn into guest accounts with limited features.

Free access to Playchess broadcast room is now a thing of the past. I got a reply from Chessbase that I need to subscribe by buying a new serial number.

Polo :
Does anybody know if you get full access to the Playchess broadcast archives with a full membership?
11.5.2008 7:55am
Dennis Monokroussos:
One never got full access to the archives with only a membership; the ducat charge was always in place. As for the serial number issue, that was related to the world championship match - if they let every guest in, the server would crash. Everything should be back to normal this week.

Sound great. I'll give it another try tonite and let you know if I am successful.

Great, I'll try too!

Enpassant:
Yeah, this serial number thing is not fair. They should just let the users register. I am paying through ducats anyways. I found out you can't buy ducats without a valid serial number.

Dennis Monokroussos:
I'm not sure I understand what you're saying, Enpassant. Do you mean registering for free, without a legitimately purchased account? If that's what you mean, I don't understand how you could possibly deem their rejecting that as unfair. If you mean something else, whereby a customer willing to purchase an account is somehow unable to do so, then let me know.

In any event, I don't really understand how their actions are unfair. People with expired accounts - freeloaders, in other words - were able to watch my shows for free for the four or five years I've been doing this. That's generosity from the server, giving up bandwidth and a quality product for absolutely nothing. This stops for several weeks during a premier event so the server doesn't crash, so that paying customers don't miss out on the biggest event of the year, and they're suddenly "unfair"?

Srinivas Patri (mail):
Speaking for myself, I don't think that's unfair. I was under the impression that these shows were free, i.e., people who log onto the server as guests would be able to watch them without having a valid serial number, similar to your Chessvideos.tv shows. Maybe this impression is mistaken. If that's the case, then there is no problem.

Enpassant:
Dennis,I have never watched your show for free. I like to browse through the archives on my own schedule and do not mind paying the 10 ducats it takes.

However, now that my account has expired, I can't buy ducats and thus no access to the archives !

Enpassant:

Ah, I see, and understand, though I believe the price is 2 ducats per show, at least most of the time. Sometimes, unfortunately, technical mishaps split the show up into bits, each of which costs 2 ducats. Anyway, try again now; I believe that the restrictive policy has been rescinded, now that they don't have to worry about server overload.

I was unable to view show last nite. Same error "Rank is not high enough to enter Broadcast Room".

Did anybody with a guest account have any luck?
11.6.2008 9:48am
Srinivas Patri (mail):
No, no luck...wasn't able to get in.
